Entertaining Herself

Mercena Close Up

(Why am I naming days?)

9/28/14, Day 14,026 (Mercena Day 44): Entertaining herself

Every day, another little breakthrough.

Yesterday, for the first time, Mercena entertained herself without parental razzle-dazzle for two extended periods of time. Prior to this, if she’d been left alone anywhere but in here bassinet for sleep, she’d quickly start a-fussing. But on day 44, that started to change.

Lest I paint too pretty a picture of Babyville, yesterday also involved a colossal spit-up with either caused or was the result of her not sleeping during her afternoon nap. And so it was a very ragged baby we put down last night.

We began the day by visiting Hope Garland’s Bradley Method class. You’ll remember, dear reader, that Hope was our excellent instructor whose class helped give us such a beautiful birth. She’d invited us to speak to her current class, and it was a powerful moment to walk into that room of expecting parents and remember how it felt to be so close to the other side of that parenting line: all the apprehension, uncertainty and excitement.

We shared our birth stories, what we learned and what we might have done differently. I hope it was useful to the soon-to-be-parents, though i wonder if the most useful part was simply seeing two happy parents with a happy baby who blissfully slept through most of the class (with a feeding in the middle).

For soon-to-be-parents, we will highly recommend Hope’s class!

The day also featured a trip to the Forest Hills Fair (funnel cake) and a fair amount of Flux work. We’re trying out a new project management system called Basecamp that I think is awesome, but we’ll see if it works with the rest of the Creative Partners.

Technique never stands still: it only advances or retreats…

What small things did I do yesterday to help build the Honeycomb?
(And what does it mean to “Help build the honeycomb?”)

  • Ate and cooked local, organic, vegetarian food, and used cloth diapers for Mercena;
  • Composted our food waste from the past week, and shopped at our local organic farmer’s market;
  • Shared our birth experience with the soon-to-be parents of Hope Garland’s Bradley Method class.
