Gidion’s Knot

(Why am I naming days?)

2/22/14, Day 13,786: Gidion’s Knot

This day is so named because I saw a preview performance of Johnna Adam’s Gidion’s Knot, assistant directed by Heather (and directed by Austin Pendleton). It has been a great joy to see this play reach so many theatres across the country, and to hear of friends appearing in the the towering roles (old friend Karen Peakes just played Heather in Philly). The play inspired my own The Fields of Blue and Glow, and it is in my top 5 of Johnna’s plays (swimming somewhere around Rattlers, Sans Merci, Angel Eaters and Skinless). I remember when she first brought pages of the play into Flux Sunday, and that Sunday long ago where we heard the original incarnation of the play with two men.

Hearing it again so soon after producing Sans Merci, it was fascinating to see how those plays echo and inform each other. They are co-orbital planets, each a separate world in its own right, yet tugging on each other’s waters as they circle the darkness together. Any director looking to properly stage the one should know the other. I look forward to being an old man and reading scholarly papers about these two plays, though perhaps I won’t need to wait so long…

I also had the pleasure of rehearsing Blood Brothers feeling much less sick than the pass few days. I’m not all the way better, but I’m on the mend, and it’s amazing how some of the acting problems I was having disappeared with a warmer day and cooler head.

Yesterday also marked the first alcoholic beverage I’ve had in two weeks, at a now-rare dinner out with Heather. I have cut back to save money for multiple reasons (spurred in part by this conversation with David Marcus) and have been surprised how after the first week, the longing for a post-work drink disappeared. Change has become more possible for me through the keeping of this journal, and I’m so grateful to all of you who have let me know one way or another that you’re reading this.

Technique never stands still: it only advances or retreats…

What small things did I do the past day to help build the Honeycomb?
(And what does it mean to “Help build the honeycomb?”)

  • Rehearsed Blood Brothers;
  • Signed a petition against Arizona’s new discrimination laws;
  • Attended Gidion’s Knot;
  • Asked Chevron to provide better compensation for the human lives lost in a recent PA fracking explosion that pizza;
  • Signed Kay Hagan’s petition to keep birth control legal for citizens of North Carolina;
  • Ate vegetarian meals (mostly organic and vegan, some local);
