The Right Kind of Sleep

(Why am I naming days?)

2/11/14, Day 13,795: Sometimes You Just Need The Right Kind of Sleep

This day is so named because I felt the blues early this week, on a Tuesday. They began Monday night after the Lark workshop, when I felt that gap between the artist I’d like to be and the artist I am yawn again. This is always a source of useless and embarrassingly self-involved pain for me, and when I’m rested, I usually have the will-power to hold my sword and staff up to say “you shall not pass.” (This makes two straight journal entries with a Tolkien metaphor, for those counting at home.)

When this particular demon takes hold, it can pry the lid off my soul and let some other demons in: my fear of mortality, my self-destructiveness, and other less savory interlocutors and dark persuaders. The best I can do then is to simply remind myself the lights will change, the wind pick up again, and really I just need the right kind of sleep. And so, waking up this morning after that sleep, I found the demons gone and my energies restored. Sometimes you just need the right kind of sleep, and to not mistake a need of the body for a want of the soul…

Technique never stands still: it only advances or retreats…

What small things did I do yesterday to help build the Honeycomb?
(And what does it mean to “Help build the honeycomb?)

  • Participated in a great Flux Creative Partner meeting–it’s so exciting to me to see our ka-tet grow stronger, and to see the newer Creative Partners lead;
  • Signed up for this online action against Walmart’s support for the Keystone pipeline;
  • For TCG, shared/facilitated posts on Woolly Mammoth’s Connectivity program; Toya Lillard’s post on Gender Parity; worked on press releases for World Theatre Day, the Edgerton new play grants;  and participated in planning for future capitalization efforts;
  • Asked the EPA to close the loopholes that allow for pollution of our waterways;
  • Cooked and ate all vegetarian (and mostly vegan and organic, with some local)
  • Asked the FWS to drop their plan to delist gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act, contrary to the recommendations of an independent panel of scientists;
  • Asked Google to sever ties with ALEC;
